Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Thinking Outside the Green Box

You’re probably familiar with the popular catchphrase, “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.” This is a great way to help people to identify how they can reduce their environmental impact. The issue many people have with extreme environmentalist views is that they are very restrictive. The environmentalist paradigm seeks to reduce, limit and stop things that are bad for the environment. While this may seem to be beneficial, it goes against the grain of our culture and how we are raised in many cases.

Humans, by nature, are opportunists. Humans are innovative, creative, intelligent beings that have amazing potential. Humans have sent people to the moon, designed computers and technology that enables people across the world to communicate ideas and beliefs, created medical technology that enables the gender of an unborn child to be revealed and discovered new medical procedures that replace open-heart surgery with a simple outpatient procedure. Humans have done many incredible things, and in order for environmentalism to really thrive, environmentalists should try to revamp what may be perceived as a very limiting lifestyle.

In general, we like to push the limits. Many people, such as supporters of genetically modified foods, seek to grow more food. Though this is certainly an innocent goal in itself, considering how many people are going hungry, genetically modified foods present many environmental concerns. In many hotly debated issues of this nature the keyword for raising support seems to be “more”.

Instead of condemning our society, we need to challenge ourselves to innovate new ways to maintain and improve our lifestyles in a green way. For example, the use of fossil fuels is causing global warming. Granted, the reduction of the use of fossil fuels is an important component of managing global warming, it’s impossible to just stop using fossil fuels without replacing it with something else. Inventors have created incredible clean energy technology, such as solar and wind energy technology. This is an example of how, when given the power to create, we can come up with fascinating, effective solutions to problems.

It’s important that we maintain a positive outlook. Rather than to only seek to restrict human behavior, we should try to unleash the power of human potential. We are an incredible species, capable of amazing things. Simply reducing or restricting our society will never work. Instead, challenges you to create an alternative to the “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.” mantra. Let’s tackle environmental issues in the most positive, proactive and eco-friendly ways we can!
