Default BPA Free?

What exactly is BPA? I know the name of the substance but how exactly does it affect body negatively? I see that manufacturers are racing who will produce better BPA free food and drink packaging.

Bisphenol A, commonly abbreviated as BPA, is declared a toxic substance in many countries of the World. It is especially dangerous for small children and is therefore not suitable material for making baby bottles.

I always make sure to buy BPA free products especially for things that I will be using over and over (food containers, water bottles, baby bottles, etc). I like to buy products that are as natural as they can be.

BPA is a chemical used in the production of plastic items such as baby bottles, food and drink containers and metal products such as food cans. From what I've read, since BPA is commonly used as a coat or lining for plastic and metal items, this chemical can penetrate the food. Too much exposure (usually through ingestion of BPA) is believed to affect metabolic processes and hormone functions.

They are still studying it, but BPA is estrogenic, so it interferes with natural hormone function and is linked to increased risk of breast and prostate cancer, immune system functions, and other problems. Infants and children seem the most susceptible to BPA, although effects may not show until later in life.
