Default Alternative to Insecticides

I'm looking for an alternative I can use to spray for cabbage worms and other pesky insects that want to destroy my plants. I need something that is not only environmentally friendly, but also something that is safe for pets. I have dogs and cats that are indoor/outdoor animals so I have to watch for anything that would hurt them.

You can make a home made pepper spray with cayenne peppers and spray that on and around your plants.
