I have several windows in the front of my house which catch the afternoon sun. I don't really want to cover them completely because it would block out the view completely. What if I had these windows tinted with window tint? Would that cut down on the heat that comes in these windows in the afternoon? I don't mind in the winter time but during the summer it increases the heat in our house tremendously which we then have to cool even though I try to cut down on the air conditioning as much as possible. Help?

It really sounds like a good idea to me. You may also want to plant a tree between you and the afternoon sun. You may have to plant a couple that will eventually provide shade to the house. You will find your air conditioning needs decrease when the trees get larger.
