I know all batteries have different characteristics so the smartest thing to do would be to read the package. It can probably tell you the safe way to do it. As for the "greenest" way, I know what I do is take electrical tape and rap them up and recycle them in a separate container.

its interesting how when you pay attention to something it is so much more apparent. I realized that 5 of the supermarkets around me have recycling beens dedicated to just that. Its nice to see initiative =)

I think the best way is to minimise using disposable batteries and opt for rechargeable ones instead. Thankfully, here in the UK stores have got battery-recycling bins.

Check with your local stores especially any that offer film developing. Our local pharmacy's film counter will take all of our old batteries and recycle them. It's easy and doesn't cost us a cent that way.
