Default Gardening Without Pulling Weeds

I love the concept of gardening without having to pull weeds. I use plain newspaper I have collected over the winter to place between rows and between plants in the flower beds. This is a fantastic way to encourage worms to live there and to have very few if any weeds to pull. I've done this for three years now and my vegetables and flowers are healthier than every.

Hey, that is a better way than using black colored plastic to discourage weeds and to keep moisture. I will adopt your style of using old newspaper in my garden.

Thanks for sharing that I never though of doing this myself, all tough earthworms are natures combines, so I don't know if separating them from your soil will do more bad than good.

Is the ink on the newspapers completely non-toxic and biodegradeable? I like your idea but I want to be sure that I'm not adding substances to the soil and ground water that are harmful.

Yes, they are. Most newspapers now use soy ink to print their newspapers. The newspapers will disintegrate and return to the soil by the next year. The worms like tilling the soil under the newspaper because it keeps the soil moister and cooler. I've raised my newspapers up sometimes and found a whole warren of worm burrows. They love it under there!
