Default Earth Sheltered and Underground Homes

I think the most environmentally-friendly home designs are the earth-sheltered and underground homes. They don't disturb the natural environment like other designs do and conserve energy used for heating and cooling. My concern would be lack of natural light and access to the outside, which I believe could be addressed by having a glass-covered atrium in the middle, but then that might defeat the purpose of building that way. Does anyone live in an underground or earth-sheltered home?

I know a couple who built an earth-sheltered or underground home. The live in Indiana, where the winter temperatures can get close to zero or below during some winters. Their heating bill is very low, which is not only good for their budget, but for the environment and conservation efforts.

I've seen underground homes in the midwest as well. The owners liked the low electric bills, of course, but they complained about frequent moisture/mold issues.

We built an earth sheltered home just outside Austin, TX a couple of years ago and have lived in it since. We enjoy it a lot, and it has met our expections. There have been no problems with water or anything else.

If you want to see it under construction do a Google search on 'arant, earth' for extensive photos.

I will be happy to expand or to answer questions.
