Default Bio fuels should we stay away from them ?

Taking into account the fact that the population of the world is growing at an alarming rate and it's already a strain on the planet to feed us, should we really start making more bio fuels?

As what I mentioned on the other thread similar to this topic, I think bio fuels are just a temporary solution to our problem. Electric power is, from my opinion, the next main energy to power our vehicles.

With regards to what you mentioned about population growth, I think lands should be used for planting food rather than for fuel. But the thing is, owners of these lands prefer bigger profit and right now bio fuel is a very lucrative product.

There is lots and LOTS of unused bio-mass wasted by-product from agriculture and forestry that could be used to supplement other sources of energy. I don't think it's an all or nothing kind of thing.

It's true that there is a lot of bio-waste that is produced from growing crops. I wonder if that is what they have in mind in producing bio-fuels. I've always had the impression that they are referring to growing crops and using them to make fuel. It would be great if they could grow the crops for food and use the waste for bio-fuels. It seems like a very eco-friendy solution to me.

There are some innovative farmers in the mid-west who make their own bio-fuel from their agricultural waste, so they are proof that it can be done and it makes sense.

We actually did come calculations and a project on that in my Chemistry class in college and we found that it would not be profitable to use bio fuels because it would take up a lot of land, water, and food. There are so many starving people in the world, that it just would not make sense. Plus it is impossible to come up with that much fuel to be profitable.

Well I think the major reason people are starving is poor distribution of resources like food, as opposed to not having enough food. I do agree biofuels are not as practical a solution as electric cars, which is a shame because biofuels seem more eco-friendly.
