A Car that Runs off of Water! This kit uses a reversible fuel cell, so you can use the solar panel to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen gases, and then use the stored gases to power the car! Detailed instruction booklet has lots of scientific explanations to help understand how it works.
This kit is a great way of demonstrating energy conversion, and how electrolysis of water can be used to store solar electricity. Electrolysis is also a great visual demonstration of the molar ratios of hydrogen and oxygen in water (2:1).
The kit includes a solar cell that provides the electricity needed to activate electrolysis. During electrolysis, hydrogen and oxygen are stored as gases in small built-in compartments. Then switch the wires to run in fuel cell mode, and the gases are fed into the fuel cell creating electric power to run the car motor. The fuel-cell powered motor can also be used to do weight-lifting experiments!
