More and more baby products are becoming available to green parents. Baby bottles are some of the many products whose markets have transitioned to include a number of more eco-friendly options. Parents can now choose from a number of eco-friendly, reusable bottles to recyclable bag inserts. However, we must question which option is more sustainable. Reusable bottles are the answer, especially those that are not composed of plastic. Plastic is never a great choice when it comes to storing fluids or foods in them as it has a tendency to emit harmful chemicals when introduced to heat; bags are no exception. At the same time, a great amount of energy is used to clean and recycle plastic bags in comparison to the amount used to clean and reuse bottles.
When it comes to reusable bottles, it is a healthier and more eco-friendly choice to choose glass baby bottles. Glass bottles are becoming more and more popular once again. Some parents have voiced concerns over the consequences if one of these bottles were to break, however, different companies have actually created easy-to-grip, vibrantly colored, dishwasher-safe sleeves. Bottles such as the Wee-go bottles are protected from breaking by a silicone sleeve. The sleeves are completely non-toxic and feature many adorable designs.
It isn’t just the bottle that has undergone eco-friendly improvements. Bottle nipples are being created using silicone instead of plastic. Not only are they more environmentally responsible, but they do not contain BPA, PVC or other harmful components. Dr. Brown’s is one of the many recognizable manufacturers producing bottles and bottle nipples of this nature.
Stainless steel baby bottles have proven to be another eco-friendly, simple alternative. Not only are they 100% recyclable, but the stainless steel does not break down when heat or cold is introduced. Stainless steel is also scratch-resistant so it is difficult for bacteria and other particles to grow within the bottles as they are easy to clean! Several manufacturers, such as Kleen Kantenn, are currently producing stainless steel baby bottles. These bottles are composed of medical-grade stainless steel, include food-grade nipples made of silicone and are tested for other heavy metals to ensure your child will not have exposure to anything harmful.
So, when it comes to the debate over reusable bottles versus recyclable bags the reusable bottles easily win. If you are able to make the switch from plastic bottles to stainless steel or glass bottles that is even better! Not only are these cost-effective because of the length of time you can continue to reuse them, but you will avoid the possibility of exposing your child to harmful chemicals. With so many benefits it’s hard NOT to consider switching! You can find a long list of eco-friendly bottles, including glass, stainless steel and recyclable, here on EnviroCitizen.org.
