Weber Thompson won recognition in 2009 for their project called the Terry Thomas. The Terry Thomas was designed to provide a healthy and creative work environment that would illustrate the possibilities of sustainable design. The project was driven by a future tenant for whom a new office was needed for space to accommodate a rapidly expanding architectural practice. The company that would be occupying the building wanted to remain in the same neighborhood where it had operated for seventeen years, yet in a building that would exemplify commitment to sustainable design. This project was chosen as an AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Green Project for 2009. It was submitted by Weber Thompson in Seattle, Washington.
EnviroCitizen.org has found that sustainability is infused throughout the culture at Weber Thompson. Their internal Green Team has an active membership of over 60% of the staff, from administration to principals, who are dedicated to incorporating sustainability into both their own projects and their internal operations. From designing and inhabiting our naturally-ventilated and daylit office building to sponsoring carbon-offsetting tree planting parties, their commitment to sustainability is absolute. They are a wonderful example of how to be green by example.
Weber Thompson's employees are constantly searching out ways to reduce the environmental impact of daily operations, from organizing tree planting parties and offsetting carbon output to lobbying to replace their parking needs with free transit passes and producing an electronic newsletter with tips on being green at home.
Weber Thompson was founded in 1987 as an architectural firm focused primarily on urban infill, mixed-use projects. The firm has since evolved into a highly-diversified design agency with capabilities in four complementary design disciplines: Architecture, Interior Design, Community Design and Landscape Architecture. With special attention to their original vision, the environment, and careful collaboration between client and design/construction teams, the company's primary objective is to design exceptional, sustainable projects.
It's companies like Weber Thompson that EnviroCitizen.org believes prove that the marriage between beautiful design and green sustainability is a natural, harmonious and achievable one. With the increase of awareness amongst consumers regarding the environment and green initiatives, it's no wonder demand is increasing amongst individuals and businesses to go green. EnviroCitizen.org can only hope that long-established companies like Weber Thompson continue to do excellent work in the industry, leading by example and showing newer companies how it should be done. Weber Thompson is truly a company that walks the green walk.
