EnviroCitizen.org is happy to share that any celebration you choose to organize can easily be made sustainable! With a little effort, research and dedication, you can have fun while supporting a healthy environment !
SUSTAINABLE WEDDINGS
- Invitations - Weddings consume a huge amount of paper. If you would like to send out paper mailers, try using 100% recycled paper, partially recycled paper or tree-free papers with eco-friendly ink instead. If you are willing to forgo the paper goods, you may want to consider distributing all of your mail-outs electronically. You can easily design a beautiful, personalized invitation (using either design software or one of the many wedding websites scattered over the internet) and send it out via email. If you choose to send your mail-outs electronically, make sure to save copies of each on a cd so that you can remember them for years to come.
- Foods - When it comes to food, try to find organic food options free of pesticides and perservatives. Organic beverages are also a refreshing, low-impact option which will not negatively impact the environment. Make sure that their bottles or cans are made of recycled materials. You can choose to have the wedding catered or you can make the food yourself, making your wedding more economical and less wasteful.
- Favors - Instead of spending large amounts of money on favors, consider donating that money to your favorite charity instead. If you would like to give out favors choose organic foods, wines or plantable packets of flowers or herbs.
SUSTIANABLE FUNERALS
- Select an eco-friendly casket - These come in a variety of different types and range in price, the cheapest of which are $50 and is made of cardboard. Bamboo and other highly biodegradable materials are also attractive options.
- Decide against embalming - Embalming is relatively unnecessary if a closed casket is chosen and will lessen the chemical impact on the environment.
- Skip the vault - Vaults are concrete or metal boxes that hold the casket once it is lowered into the ground. The vault protects the casket, but also prevents the ground from settling as the casket deteriorates.
SUSTIANABLE PARTIES
- Choose the location carefully ! Choose a central location that will be easy for the majority of your guests to get to. This will save on the use of non-renewable fuels. Try to stay in the city. The city uses less energy per capita than the country and public transportation is available.
- Use natural foods , preferably supporting local cultures. This means less energy will be used in transportation, and the food will be better for you as it is locally grown. Try to get organic foods!
