 Furniture can be made from all sorts of versatile materials. One of the new eco-friendly options that are getting attention is furniture made from recycled cardboard. Cardboard, especially when it’s recycled, can be a very green, surprisingly versatile, and durable material.
Recycled paper products are very eco-friendly having never touched a landfill. This results in less impact on forest resources, less air pollution, less water pollution, less water consumption, less energy consumption, and less solid waste. Papermaking fibers can typically be recycled 5-7 times before they become too short to be recycled again.
There are many designers who have come up with interesting recycled cardboard furniture. European Karton Art Design has created sophisticated end elegant furniture made entirely from recycled cardboard. “The furniture evokes the atmosphere of good old times, yet gives the feel of contemporary eco-design to make you comfortable in the passage between past and future,” explains Karton Art Design. The eco furniture is the brainchild of Hungarian installation artist Edit Szilvasy and furniture designer Andras Balogh. The recycled cardboard furniture is easy to assemble using only paperclips, packs up flat for transport, and has a guaranteed life of three years with an estimated life expectancy of ten years. The furniture uses a patented technology that makes the furniture as strong as wood, yet as light as paper. Currently, the cardboard furniture line includes filing cabinets, bookshelves, wall panels, beds, counters and desks.
Other American companies also specialize in cardboard furniture. With chairs, vases and children’s items like lemonade stands; it seems that this type of furniture can be put in anyone’s home. The furniture is all unbelievably strong. The chairs typically are made from triple or double walls of fluted cardboard that can hold at least 600 pounds. They typically sell for under $100. All furniture and decor items are made from 100% recycled cardboard. When it’s time to redecorate, you can recycle your chairs! While assembly is required, there’s no need for glue or screws. This furniture allows style and fun with no guilt.
