- RINGS – Did you know that the production/mining involved to create an average size, plain wedding band can result in 20 tons of mine waste? This takes a huge toll on the environment. To avoid this, many consumers have recently chosen to use silver bands instead as they have a friendlier impact upon the earth. Another option is to purchase a pre-used wedding band, recycled gold wedding band or to use an heirloom band. These bands will still hold the importance of your legal union, but will be much friendlier on the environment.
- INVITATIONS – A huge amount of paper is consumed for weddings. Consider all of the send-outs that you use for a wedding—wedding announcements, save the date cards, invitations, registrations, thank-you cards, etc. There are many ways to avoid the over-consumption of paper goods for your wedding. If you desire to have physical mail-outs you can use 100% recycled paper, partially recycled paper or tree-free paper. Non-toxic ink is also available, such as soy ink. If you are willing to forgo paper goods in general, you should consider creating all of your invitations electronic wedding mail-outs that can be sent electronically.
- FAVORS – Wedding favors can cost up to $400 dollars for an average-sized wedding. This is a huge amount! Consider donating the allocated favor money to your favorite charity or try to gift something renewable. Potted plants, packets of your favorite wildflowers or bulbs are other fabulous alternatives. Just make sure they’re organic !
- FLOWERS - In traditional weddings, flowers play a very large roll. Consider using organic flowers or even local, native potted plants. Potted plants benefit the environment, are lest wasteful and last longer. These plants can be taken home or can be given to guests as favors. If you are willing to avoid fresh flowers altogether, consider dried arrangements or reused silk flowers.
