We’d all like to have germ free households but that’s just not practical. If we can disinfect our homes without using toxic disinfectants we’re adding to a healthier lifestyle. There are several ways to keep germs under control as well as have no worries over chemicals. There are choices in disinfectants that are endless. Some can be bought and some can be made right at home. These will create a home that is not only clean, but safe.
If the store is the most convenient option, the key is to read labels carefully. Borax based disinfectants are usually a safe option. It is important to avoid chlorine, artificial dyes, petroleum, phosphates and artificial fragrances as well as artificially produced ammonia. Usually health food stores or retailers who specialize in green products are the best places to look. There are several manufacturers, such as Seventh Generation, who make these.
There are also several disinfectants that can be made at home that will save money as well as keep the home safe and clean. Hydrogen peroxide (3%) and vinegar are great to spray on surface areas. Just put either in a clean, opaque spray bottles and spray. Be careful with hydrogen peroxide, it can bleach surfaces and should not be swallowed, but It is great at getting rid of E. coli and salmonella bacteria.
Essential oils are great disinfectants that come with an aromatic bonus. Grapefruit seed oil and eucalyptus oil are also good to use when diluted with water and a small amount of vinegar. Many European doctors’ offices have used eucalyptus oil in keeping facilities clean. The undiluted oil should not be handled without gloves because it can irritate skin. If 1.6 ounces of eucalyptus oil is combined with a liter of water, it is great at getting rid of most microbial organisms. For grapefruit oil, about 20 drops to one gallon is a potent disinfectant with a lovely citrus smell. Eco-friendly disinfectants are a healthier, cheaper alternative to the commercial cleaners that line the shelves of our stores. The savings will not just be immediate at the cash register, but also in less environmental irritants.
