Lotions and Other Organic Cosmetic Care
Many conscious consumers have already switched to organic foods and are also choosing to switch to other organic products such as cosmetics. There are lots of lotions, makeup and other products that can be bought both in-store as well as online.
When searching for organic makeup you want to ensure that products are safe for sensitive skin and have no parabens, petroleums, glutene or other synthetic ingredients. These chemicals should be avoided. They are not at all natural! They can cause harmful reactions including rashes, headaches, cancer and possibly even brain damage. Skin care products which are synthetic often contain compounds like mercury, lead, formaldehyde and petroleum. These artificial products can create serious and harmful reactions, especially for those with sensitive skin as well as those with long-term health problems.
The best tip in skin care is to use products which are certified organic, such as those from companies like Aveda. Every cosmetic you can think of can be found in an organic alternative.
The products available in organic forms include (but are not limited to) the following:
• Concealers
• Foundation
• Eyeliner
• Eyeshadow
• Blushes
• Lip color
• Lotion
• Soap
• Shampoo
These items often contain no preservatives, colorants, dyes or perfumes. It may be surprising to know the fifth largest allergen in the world is fragrance. A loophole in federal law does not require companies to declare any of the dozens of toxic chemicals that a single product's fragrance mixture can contain. Artificial fragrances, which frequently contain phthalates, can also trigger allergic reactions and other health problems. Be mindful of the hidden dangers that "fragrance" or "parfum" listed on ingredients labels can pose. Strive to choose fragrance-free products instead. If you still want a scent, shop for one that uses essential oils instead.
Organic ingredients are those grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, which is healthier for the planet and healthier for our bodies. The USDA National Organic Program has been certifying personal care products since 2003, and an increasing number of organic skincare products are now endorsed with the USDA organic seal. EnviroCitizen.org suggests that you look for this and other third-party regulated seals regarding the ingredients and practices used to create certain products.
EnviroCitizen.org challenges you to research what goes into the cosmetics you purchase. Take into account the effects they can have on both your health and the planet.
