One of EnviroCitizen.org's favorite things about green energy contracting businesses is that the people who run them are often environmentalists who are in it for more than the profit. Chris Anderson, Chief Operations Officer at Borrego Solar, is the perfect example. Anderson lived in the San Francisco Bay Area until 2007, when he moved across the country to Peterborough, New Hampshire in order to open Borrego Solar East. Once he arrived to New Hampshire, Anderson needed a place to live. While he could have chosen to buy an existing home with green features, Anderson wanted to do more than that. So, he built his own home that is entirely off the grid. His home is powered entirely by solar photovoltaic cells (solar panels), a solar thermal system, a wood pellet boiler and a few unique features of his own.
After living in the San Francisco Bay Area for so many years, he knew that he wanted a modern home. He also loved the traditional, colonial style of New England homes. So, he blended the two! After two years and about a half of a million dollars, Anderson succeeded in overcoming some unique challenges (like powering a construction site without electricity from the public grid) and building a very green home.
Anderson had wanted to expand Borrego Solar to the Northeast since the very beginning, desiring to make solar energy accessible nationwide. Borrego Solar specializes in commercial and public sector solar electric systems that can be connected to the public grid. They are well established, having operated and installed over a thousand solar photovoltaic projects in the past twenty-five years. They have offices in San Diego, Berkeley and Boston, offering services throughout all of California and New England.
Borrego Solar is committed to educating individuals, businesses and communities about how solar power works and its many benefits (both to users and to the environment). Every design is custom, so that each solar photovoltaic system meets the needs of each unique situation. They provide excellent service throughout the entire installation process. They are so fiercely committed to their solar photovoltaic systems that they will pay for any lost power in the unlikely event that a customer's system is ever down for more than a day. They also offer warranties for their systems, most of which come with either a ten-year total warranty or a twenty-five-year total warranty.
Borrego Solar is definitely an eco-friendly company. They use solar energy systems in their offices whenever possible and are recycling fanatics. They purchase from green vendors, pay all of their employees a living wage (which is more than minimum wage) and give them vacation time and benefits.
They are, in every sense of the word, an awesome green energy contracting company in EnviroCitizen.org's opinion. |
