 From the word "green" alone, one can easily guess that the package is positive in relation to the environment. Indeed, that is right. A green travel package is a combination of travel and tour activities that are ecologically friendly. It was developed as a response to the agenda of the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992. During this summit, 182 state heads from all over the globe met, formed and promoted the principles of Agenda 21 which is about sustainable development.
It is the principal goal of green travel packages to create ideas and events that would contribute to a more sustainable world. Specifically, it is a program of travel and tour industries that attempt to reduce emissions of green house gases, improve planning and management of land use, reduce use of fresh water resources, improve quality of air, reduce noise, improve management of waste water, manage and conserve energy efficiency, improve management of cultural and social issues, support developments for local communities, conserve and manage the ecosystem, implement policies on recycling and reusing and minimize waste. With all these plans, it is envisioned that all major environmental challenges which our planet faces these days will be addressed eventually.
In general, a green travel package is bound for a sustainable tourism location. The travel packages offered under these project aims to increase awareness and the participation of clients in the development of sustainable tourism. The project is actually based on the knowledge that the success of the tourism industry in these new millennium actually depends not only on economic and social sustainability but also on environmental sustainability. Thus, all the products and services being offered in the green travel package seek to protect tradition, culture, natural resources and wildlife. That is why hospitality industries these days are providing education on the environment on top of tourism information. Moreover, they are now incorporating so-called green accommodation and amenities. Their activities are almost all environmentally inclined such as tree planting with certificates, bicycle trekking or nature trail touring, snorkeling, eating in restaurants offering organic foods, hiking, kayaking, and many more fun filled activities. These activities are age specific. Thus, there are activities designed for kids, adults and the elderly. Through this, safety and security, aside from great fun and experience, is assured.
