Social events are part of the spice of life. We use invitations to have people come to celebrate weddings, graduations, and all kinds of things. Those of us trying to live green lifestyles have new options to invite people over without compromising the environment.
For more casual events or for the more tech savvy, there is the option of an e-vite. An e-vite is a paperless invite. The easiest way to accomplish this is by e-mailing out an invitation. You don’t have to be artistic to create an invitation. A simple Who, What, When, Where will usually do. There is also a variety of card styles online. You just fill in the details of your event. Most of these are also free.
In the event that it’s likely that an e-vite won’t suit the event, here are a few suggestions to help you mitigate your impact on the environment with your invitations:
• Lower the number of sheets of paper and cards in each invitation by including a postcard or online RSVP option
• Use an online event blog for updates, maps and interesting info about the area that will be useful to them rather than including all that information in the invitation
• Make sure that you highlight green or environmentally friendly local hotels, hybrid car rentals, public transportation options and local, independently owned organic restaurants if it applies
• Just say “no” to confetti and other superfluous inserts
• Use recycled or handmade papers or envelopes and cards made out of cotton, bamboo, hemp or other non-tree items
• Opt for vegetable or soy based inks
• Avoid cards and envelopes with a metallic sheen or plastic coating as they are more difficult to recycle
