The Green Education Foundation is a new, non-profit organization that promotes and enhances environmental education in schools. Its premise is that children learn more than academics from kindergarten through 12th grade, they also learn societal behavior, ethics, concepts, truths, and attitudes.
The folks at the Green Education Foundation want to make sure children learn about environmental awareness. If they do, as the Green Foundation claims, they’ll be able to make greater progress toward the achievement of a sustainable world.
They aim to prove that environmentally sound practices can be initiated both personally and institutionally, and that these practices will have “measurable and sustainable” impacts on our environment.
If you’re a parent, teacher, or even just someone concerned about environmental education, the Green Education Foundation is a great resource. Its mission is “to provide educational resources that promote sustainable, impactful pro-green habits and practices in children, families, and communities.”
They also sponsor national public awareness campaigns designed to give children the education and skills necessary to address environmental problems like waste management and habitat pollution, namely oceans, air, and fresh water sources.
The Green Education is a great resource for families because it stimulates family-based green practices, such as recycling at home where your child takes an active role in the process. They offer resources for teachers who want to integrate green activities and projects into their curriculum. They also engage sports teams to play green, which is a unique concept that is paying off.
Teachers can get a wealth of information through the Green Education Foundation. They have an entire section of their website designed to implementing green education in the classroom and on fun field trips. They provide links to great educational websites like Act Green!, Alliance for Community Trees, Audubon Adventures, CarbonCounted, the Center for Environmental Education Online, Cool School Challenge, Earthman Project, the Environmental Literacy Council, Encyclopedia of the Earth, ERTHNXT, Give Water a Hand Action Guide, the National Grid, and The Greens. All of these resources have been carefully selected by the Green Education Foundation for their relevance, ability to convey environmental material effectively, and their own good green practices.
One of their greatest efforts is National Green Week. Their goal is to mobilize one million children to participate in ‘eco-challenges’ during Feb. 1-5, 2010. The objective is “to empower children to become environmental stewards within the context of their own lives in an effort to preserve our planet’s valuable resources”.
The Green Education Foundation was founded in 2008, and it is already doing big things in great ways. These people have got green education figured out and they are going to make a huge impact.
