Making sure we smell appealing is something just about every man and woman tries to accomplish. One thing few people forget to do when they buy deodorant is to read the ingredient list. Many of the common deodorants out there are actually antiperspirants, which prevent the body from sweating for a short period of time when applied. The active ingredient in antiperspirants is an aluminum-based compound.Unfortunately, there are health problems associated with this compound. There is evidence linking aluminum to Alzheimer's, though additional medical research must be done in order to prove this to be an absolute possibility. Aluminum does, however, disrupt hormone levels, which may lead to thyroid problems and increase the chances of developing breast cancer. Also, by limiting sweat production, you are also limiting the ability of your body to eliminate toxins that build up. Here are a few things to try instead that are not only healthier for you, but also help our planet to stay healthy as well.
Use natural deodorant found in health food stores. Read the labels, since natural does not always mean just that. National Geographic's Planet Green Network has a wonderful website that covers what to be aware of. You might sweat a little bit more, but you will smell fine. However, once you are fully switched over, you should notice that you sweat less and smell better over time. Many people find that they don't even need to apply deodorant on a daily basis eventually.
Bacteria found on our skin causes our armpits to stink as the area becomes moist. Try washing your underarms with soapy water a few times daily. You can also apply tea tree oil, rosemary oil, eucalyptus oil, etc. or apple cider vinegar to kill the bacteria. You can also use witch hazel which acts as an astringent, which decreases, but does not completely eliminate, sweat production. It can also help to eliminate odor. Use baking soda, which is aluminum-free or corn starch to kill bacteria, keep armpits dry and keep you odor free. You can even use an all-natural mineral salt crystal to prevent odor by creating a thin barrier on the skin so that bacteria cannot form. You will still sweat with this product, but it lasts a long time and prevents body odor.
Consume a clean diet rich in whole foods; like vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. Some recommend having more parsley in your diet as well as a chlorella supplement. This will help to reduce body odor when you do sweat.
In short, EnviroCitizen.org doesn't believe that you have to give up smelling fresh to remain eco-friendly. Simply choose a deodorant product or natural method that allows you to continue to sweat (eliminating toxins) while inhibiting the presence of bad smelling bacteria.
