Earth day is rapidly approaching and as our planet ages its need for rejuvenation becomes more apparent. This is the perfect time to renew our vows with recycling, reclaiming, conservation, and utilization of energy-efficient tools. To reacquaint yourself with this terminology go to Envirocitizen.org and browse the glossary of eco-friendly terms section. When combined, these tools have an astounding impact. The current environmental crises, for which we are largely responsible, are taking their toll. Islands are sinking into the oceans due to the rapid increase in the rise of sea levels, and natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes are more prevalent- thanks to our common enemy, global warming. We must all pitch in for a few much needed “spa treatments” for our planet on this special occasion.
No matter where you are, there are ways to be mindful and take part in the April celebration.
· Inform your co-workers and collect money for a designated charity or a cause related to saving the environment.
· Remember that inviting people to carpool not only saves energy but also money and time-the other valuable resources.
· At home, plan events or throw a green-themed party and involve family, friends and neighbors to partake in fun and educational activities such as a game of charades with eco-friendly expressions. As a host you are in charge of making sure the food is locally-sourced and/or organic!
· Go through your belongings and pick out unused things for the Salvation Army, garage sale, or place of worship. Have your kids donate or pass on old toys to others. Your contribution to the environment is that much greater if you raise eco-friendly individuals.
· Plant trees together, expanding your garden and performing rewarding work.
· Take the kids for a leisurely bike ride or use the bike to run errands and give the minivan a rest.
· Become more proactive and learn what you can do to help the ecosystem.
We all should make an effort to live within our means when it comes to natural resources. This concept is known as environmental sustainability. Environmentalists have made waves and increased awareness but we’re still a long way from solely utilizing renewable resources such as solar radiation, tides, winds, and hydroelectricity. In the meantime we have to stop squandering the ones we have and learn how to conserve and utilize them more efficiently.
Let Earth day serve as a reminder to take greater care of and pride in our abode. We clean and decorate our houses, our cars, and all other earthly possessions, why not show the same consideration for our rotating home by incorporating a few subtle green changes into our everyday life? Start recycling, renewing, reducing and reusing!
