Energy use is important to those who are seeking to make their lifestyles more sustainable. It has been proven that implementing some minor improvements in a home, such as using better insulation, are very effective. Installing energy efficient windows is another improvement that can be done so that a home can be more environmentally friendly.
There are several windows that are so efficient that ENERGY STAR has had them certified as proof that they dramatically lower energy use. Installing ENERGY STAR certified windows reduces energy bills as well as carbon use by creating better insulation against heat and cold. ENERGY STAR has quantified the savings from replacing older windows with ENERGY STAR windows. For example, replacing single-pane windows saves $126 – $465, 80 pounds – 4,545 pounds of carbon dioxide, and the equivalent of 51 gallons - 234 gallons of gasoline per year. Replacing double-pane clear glass windows saves $7 – $111, 82 pounds – 1,233 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of 4 gallons - 62 gallons of gasoline per year.
Changing windows also has other benefits. In the winter, the cold, inside surface of an inefficient window pulls heat away from a room, even with a heater and thermostat set to 70 degrees. With ENERGY STAR certified windows, the interior glass stays room temperature even when the temperature outside is below freezing. Most ENERGY STAR certified windows reduce the “heat gain” into homes, more than typical windows do, without reducing the visible light. It helps you to get the light you need without the uncomfortable heat and the additional burden on your air conditioner.
There is another benefit to these windows. ENERGY STAR certified windows do not fade nearly as much as conventional windows. They have coatings that keep out the heat and act like a screen, protecting the window from harmful ultraviolet light without noticeably reducing visible light. These special coatings reduce fading by up to 75%.
There are additional financial incentives for purchasing ENERGY STAR certified windows. Many local utilities provide rebates, and there is a new federal tax credit that was recently implemented .
All these things together are fantastic reasons to switch to the new energy efficient windows. It helps to sustain our energy resources and still allows us to live comfortably.
