So, if your home is powered by clean energy, like solar or wind power, electric mowers really are eco-friendly and won't emit carbon. However, if your home is powered by fossil fuels or natural gas, as most homes are, your mower will still contribute to carbon emissions.
Manual mowers are powered by human power; you push them. So, there is no carbon emission involved in the process of mowing your lawn ( the carbon emitted during the manufacturing process is an entirely different story ). The funny thing about manual mowers, also called push mowers, is that until the 1960's or so they were the only thing being used to mow American lawns. Power mowers were considered a luxury. Manual mowers have gained popularity recently largely due to the green revolution, however.
Manual mowers, although the most eco-friendly option, require a substantially larger effort on your part. It takes work to mow your lawn with a manual mower. However, mowing your lawn with a manual mower can easily substitute a trip to the gym, so that may be a bit of a motivation. Manual mowers are also gentler on your lawn than power or electric mowers.
