EnviroCitizen.org is sure you've seen organic cotton textiles in stores. Organic cotton towels, although costlier, are usually much better quality than regular cotton. As you probably know, organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and insecticides. This is done using several methods that are old as well as new, but when used together, produce fine results. Farmers use compost, manure, special crop placement and other innovative methods to replace synthetic fertilizers. This helps in preventing runoff in water that causes pollution. Beneficial insects and carnivorous plants are used to control pests, as well. Nature's frost naturally prepares plants for harvest, instead of using toxic, synthetic counterparts. Organic cotton is generally watered using rain only, using less water than regular cotton. Organic Egyptian cotton bath towels are the most luxurious towels we've seen out there. They are extremely fluffy and absorbent and are generally larger than "regular" bath towels.
Bamboo is making an appearance in bathrooms, too. It is softer and dries quickly. Bamboo fabric is naurally absorbent as well as breathable, durable and beneficial to anyone with allergies or sensitive skin. Textiles stay fresh because bamboo is naturally antibacterial and even inhibits the growth of mildew and odors. Sometimes, they are blended with cotton. These result in a wonderful blend of absorption and comfort.
Microfiber fabric is usually a synthetic fabric but is light and extremely absorbent. Towels made from it are thin, dry quickly, very lightweight and can absorb five times their weight in water. The material itself isn't eco-friendly, but its properties in water conservation are what make it a plausible choice. The fibers are a blend of microscopic fibers that are split during manufacturing to create microscopic "hooks" which act as claws that scrape up and hold moisture and other things. They are 1/16 the thickness of a human hair and can hold six times their weight in water. It can be a great choice for bath time.
Cork is growing in popularity too. No trees have to be cut down because cork comes from bark. It is very soft because of the structure of cork which has little air pockets. Cork is also good for keeping your floors dry and naturally has antifungal properties.
EnviroCitizen.org has found that all of these materials can be used in your bathroom in many different forms; from towels to simple decorations. By using them you'll be saving money and the planet!
