Ceilings are one of the most ignored parts of a home because they are usually not the focus of a room. But they have an important role in how our homes utilize energy. Properly maintained ceilings help save energy and can provide an attractive atmosphere within the home. Painting and the ceiling can help make your home more efficient.
The color of a ceiling can affect the room temperature. Try to stick to lighter colors so that heat doesn’t collect excessively.
The ceiling's paint will eventually wear, like anything else in time. Ceilings can become damaged by moisture if water leaks into a cavity behind the ceiling. When this occurs, the ceiling's paint can crack. Merely painting over the cracked area will ensure that the paint will crack again in the future. It literally covers up the problem, but doesn’t solve it. For this reason, it is necessary to remove the cracked paint, then patch the ceiling.
First, place a painter's tarp on the floor underneath the portion of the ceiling to be repaired. This helps prevent any mess. Also, try to wear a mask over your nose and mouth so that you cannot breathe in particles or fumes. Scrape away all loose paint from the ceiling with a putty knife or a paint scraper. Next, apply some spackle to the area of the ceiling from which the paint was removed. Use a putty knife to spread the spackle over the area. The spackle will fill any chips and gaps. Feather the edges of the spackle onto the surrounding area so it adheres well. Allow the spackle patch to dry, this usually takes a few minutes. Sand the spackled area with about 150-grit sandpaper attached to a sanding block to remove any imperfections on the surface of your work. Sand the spackle until you can run your hand against the spackle without feeling any ridges. Paint the patch using a roller paintbrush to complete the repair. Try to use paint that is light colored and low VOC emitting.
