Beauty from the Bees: Beeswax Cosmetics

EnviroCitizen.org has found that beeswax has recently been used as a green cosmetic.  Throughout history, however, beeswax has been and still is used for numerous purposes; even going back to ancient Rome and Egypt.  It is an ingredient found in many soaps and moisturizers.  It is non-toxic, natural and safe.  As a skin moisturizer and protector, it makes a wonderful cosmetic foundation. 

Aunt Bee and Burt’s Bees are two companies that are famous for their cosmetics made from beeswax.  The companies also use recyclable packaging and are cruelty-free.  The products can easily be found now at stores, supermarkets as well as online.

One thing that is definitely worth a try though, is to make your own cosmetics out of beeswax.  It is very inexpensive and is a very green way to give yourself a fantastic new look.  Making your own cosmetic products is the best way to know that no controversial chemicals or animal products are being used.
 
Here is a simple recipe for your own lip glass that is featured on Planet Green. Making your own lip gloss from natural ingredients is easy.  Here is Planet Green’s basic recipe:

¼ cup of beeswax
¼ cup of castor oil
2 tbsp on sesame oil
2 tbsp of beet juice

1.    First, slowly melt the beeswax
2.    Remove the beeswax from the heat and mix in the oils.
3.    Add beet juice until you reached your desired color.
4.    Store in an airtight container in your refrigerator.     
5.    Remember, a little goes a long way with this natural lip gloss, so test sparingly!

There are also ways to make luscious lotions, perfumes and more.  Here is a recipe to make a moisturizing bar.  You can also customize it by adding a couple drops of essential oils such as lavender or mint. 

3 ounces beeswax
2 ounces cocoa butter
3 ounces sweet almond oil

1.    Melt and mix all ingredients together until thoroughly mixed. 
2.    Mold into whatever shape you desire or use a mold. 

One note of caution! Check with a physician if you may have allergies to bees or any of the other products mentioned above.  Some products can cause a reaction, so it is best to be sure that you are using something that is safe for you as well as natural.

EnviroCitizen.org believes that beeswax is a great ingredient that can easily be harvested without causing any harm to the bees.  It may be one of the best natural cosmetic aids available that also happens to be sustainable!
