Armstrong World Industries, Inc. designs and manufactures floors, ceilings and cabinets. Located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Armstrong World Industries, Inc. is housed in a wonderful, green building. The building is certified Platinum by the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. EnviroCitizen.org discovered that it is only the sixth building in existence to receive Platinum LEED certification- the first outside of California!
A whopping 75% of the energy consumed by the Armstrong Headquarters comes from their wind turbines! The building is energy-efficient and conserves water. They also recycle about 60% of the building's waste and the building is cleaned and maintained with biodegradable cleaning products. The property of the Armstrong Headquarters is even landscaped with native plants, which eliminates the need for irrigation and reduces erosion.
Michael Lockhard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Armstrong World Industries, Inc., explained the motivation behind retrofitting their headquarters, stating, "Armstrong is committed to environmental sustainability. Modifying our headquarters building to enable it to be platinum certified is a concrete manifestation of that commitment. The Armstrong team that conceived and executed this project demonstrated that we can significantly reduce our impact on the environment by changing the way buildings are designed, built and used".
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. is a great, green company. Their headquarters are as green as buildings get, but they make eco-friendly products, too! They make 100% natural linoleum and they recently came out with a new ceiling material, Tierra, which is made from very renewable resources. They work to improve their products continuously, making every effort to increase the amount of recycled content in their products. They don't add formaldehyde to their wood products and their ceiling recycling program has reduced the amount of waste that goes into landfills by more than 35,000 tons.
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. is clearly dedicated to environmental sustainability. Their headquarters, products and corporate policies reflect this. Their corporate policy states that, "Armstrong recognizes the importance of protecting the environment and using resources responsibly. We are committed to good environmental stewardship in our dealings with customers, employees, the government and our community". Armstrong World Industries, Inc. goes one step further and works with a variety of non-profit organizations to sustain healthy forests. They are partnered with Hardwood Forestry Fund to plant trees and they work with Tropical Forest Foundation to provide education and outreach programs throughout the world.
Armstrong World Industries, Inc.'s Headquarters is a great example of what great, green things people can do with the right motivation and resources. EnviroCitizen.org applauds their efforts and hopes that they continue to keep up the great work!
